Fiction - Lesson - 2 : A Dog Named Duke! :-)

Answer the following questions briefly:

Q.1.  In 1953, Hooper was a favoured young man. Explain.

Ans:  The 1953, Hooper saw many amazing thing happen in his life. He stood tall at 6'1. He used to play for his college football team. He worked as a manager at a chemical company. He was a hard - charging zones sales manager with fierce competitiveness. He always had a genuine grin of satisfaction on his face. He was favoured and liked by all.

Q.2. They said that they would create a head job for Hooper at headquarters. Explain?

(I) Who are they?

Ans:  They refers to the men from Hooper's chemical company.

(II) Why did they decide to this?

Ans:  Hooper was a talented a young man, so the company didn't want to lose him. Now, that his movement was limited by his disability, he couldn't work in his previous work area, the company decided to create a desk job for him at the company headquarters.


Q.3.  Duke was an extraordinary dog. What special qualities did he exhibit to justify this? Discuss.

Ans:  Duke was a dutiful dog, he was very loyal to his master, Chuck Hooper. When he saw his master giving up, he dutifully taught his master to maintain balance, urged him to walk at least a few metres daily, slowly building his self-confidence and finally Hooper was able to keep his balance and walk again. Duke was indeed an amazing companion for a pet. This way he helped Hooper recover 'step-by-step'.

Q.4.  What problems did Chuck face when he returned to the company headquarters?

Ans:  Chuck couldn't move like before after his accident, hence the company created a special desk job for him at the headquarters, where he was required to sit in front of a computer at the warehouse. But it didn't work out as it created a pain in his legs. So he could for only 1 hour a day.

Q.5.  Why do you think Charles Hooper's appointment as Assistant National Sales Manager is considered to be a tribute to Duke?

Ans:  Charles Hooper's appointment for the post of Assistant National Sales Manager contained the words ' step-by-step'. It was only because of Duke that Hooper recovered 'step-by-step', slowly and steadily towards improvement. Hence it could be considered a fitting tribute to Duke.
