Drama - VILLA FOR SALE! :-)

Answer the following questions briefly:

Q.1.  Why does Jeanne want to buy a villa?

Ans:  Jeanne is a loving daughter and so she wants to buy a villa for her parents. She wants to make sure her aged parents live in comfort. She is aware that her husband can afford to pay for the villa and therefore wants to buy it.

Q.2.  Why is Gaston not interested in buying the villa in the beginning?

Ans:  Gaston is aware that his wife is Jeanne is planning to buy the villa for her parents. He doesn't seem to be fond of his in laws. He knows that once Jeanne's parents take possession of the villa they will also invite her sister and her family to live with them. This doesn't go down well with him and so he starts finding fault with the villa and also claims that it is expensive.

Q.3.  Mrs. Al Smith makes many statements about the French. Pick out any two and explain.

Ans: First of all, Mrs. Al Smith asks Gaston to consult his wife, so that he could decide. When he replies in the negative, she's surprised, calls him an exception and comments, "Frenchmen  usually have to consult about ten people before they get a move on."

Next, she goes on to comment that, "Frenchmen live in the past while Americans live in the future implying that French people do not have a keen sense of business.

Q.4.  Juliette says, "Now I have one thought, that is to get the wretched place off my hands. I would sacrifice it for any price." Does she stick to her words. Why? Why not?

Ans:  Initially, Juliette just wants to get rid of the villa, that too at a throwaway price of hundred thousand francs, but later on goes back on her words and demands, two hundred fifty thousand francs. Gaston finds it highly excessive. Since Juliette is keen on a bargain, she settles for two hundred  thousand francs, this shows how greedy she is.

Q.5.  Who is better in business - Juliette or Gaston? Why?

Ans:  Gaston is definitely a hardcore bargainer. Juliette is just a fortune hunter. In the beginning she projects as if she wants to sell the villa at a throwaway price, but later on raises the price by another 150 thousand francs. She also settles down for a price of 200 thousand francs. Gaston proves smarter of the lot as he buys the villa at 200 thousand francs, later on sells it to Mrs.Al Smith at 300 thousand francs making a cool profit of a 100 thousand francs.

Q.6. Do you like / dislike Gaston?

Ans:  Gaston is not perfect, but its hard to dislike him. In the end he has his way by using his intelligence. Initially he is not keen on buying the house as he knows he'll have to put up with his in-laws, but, when he realizes that he could be profited by the deal, he goes on to buy it. He silences his wife by pretending to buy the villa, teaches the greedy Juliette a lesson and shows Mrs.Al Smith that Frenchmen indeed are smart businesspersons.

That's it! :-)
